PANAMA CITY – The Panamanian government suspended the food importation license of 53 percent of companies in the country for violating several health requirements set by law.

The suspension, which affects 3,275 companies, was ordered by the Panamanian Food Safety Authority, AUPSA, Tuesday and will be in effect until all health standards are complied “We do not believe that this measure will cause (food) shortages,” said an AUPSA spokesperson.
Of the 6,184 licensed firms in Panama authorized to buy through the Notification System for Imported Foods, 3,275 will lose their permit temporarily.
According to the same source, the majority of the companies- importing mainly pulses and canned food- told Efe that they lacked “food storage warehouse, legal representative and legal domicile,” among other lawful requirements.

“We are acting according to the policies of President Juan Carlos Varela and ensuring food safety of the country and in terms of the protection of human health,” said AUPSA general manager Yuri Huerta.
On Wednesday the government also banned the marketing in Panama of three types of children’s sweets coming from China: Laser Pop, Projector Candy and Blink Pop.

Last week local producers held a two-day agricultural strike to demand an urgent processing of a law to reform the functions of AUPSA, an agency created in 2006 to ensure safety of imported food.
