A Trip to the Gnosis Store: Why I won’t be participating in the Gnosis ICO
Imagine you pop in to the grocery store to buy an apple. You select your apple, which costs $1, and carry it to the checkout. The cashier rings you up and you hand her a dollar bill.
“It’s $1.05” she says, “there’s 5 cents in sales tax.”
You fish in your pocket for some change, when she interrupts. “Hold on. We’ve created a convenient new way for you to pay the tax. It’s called ‘tax coin.’ Step on over to that other counter and Matt will get you all set up!”
What?, you think as you make your way over to Matt at his counter. “I guess I need some tax coins?” you say.
“Great!” Matt replies. “You have a couple of options, and both of them are fantastic. You can walk around the store and buy some tax coins off of other shoppers if you want. That’s fine. Or you could purchase some Tax Coin Generators which will create tax coins for you!”
“Can’t I just…”
“Head on over to the Tax Coin Generator Contract Counter and Marty will get you set right up!”
Your blood pressure rises as you slog over to the TCGCC. “Hello!” Marty greets you. “What can I do for you?”
“I guess I need to generate some tax coins?” you say.
“Great! How much do you need?”
You reach for your wallet and pull out a $1 bill and put it on the counter.
Marty eyes the $100 bill in your wallet and says “Well, let me explain how Tax Coin Generators work. You see, they don’t generate Tax Coins unless you lock them up in a contract. And the longer you lock them up, the more Tax Coins they generate! You get a few of the Tax Coins right at the start, and the rest are slowly emitted in a steady golden stream right into your wallet. Don’t you want to consider paying taxes at our store as an investment?” He says as he points at the $100 bill.
At this point it’s worth $100 to you to get him to shut up, so you hand over the bill. He does some typing behind his terminal and gives you a QR code printout. “Alrighty, head on back to the register to pay your tax!”
As you wait in line you dig around in your pockets some more and find a nickel. When it’s your turn you hand the cashier your QR code, but you also hold up the nickel and say “Wouldn’t it have been much simpler if I had just given you this?”
She looks at you in disdain and replies, “Well you could just pay your taxes in dollars. . .but we anticipate that the vast majority of our users will prefer to pay in tax coins.”
Riiiight, you think as you walk out.
